Woakes keeps Australia in check

Chris Woakes produced the best figures by an England bowler on foreign soil in the must-win fifth one-day international against Australia in Brisbane.

The 21-year-old claimed six for 35 in just his second match as Australia were bowled out for 249 from 49.3 overs.

Under-fire stand-in captain Michael Clarke top-scored for Australia with 54 after he had been booed on his arrival at the crease by the Gabba crowd. The right-hander has become the focus of criticism in Australia following a barren winter with the bat, but passed 50 for just the second time during England's tour.

But Woakes, who three times claimed a wicket in the first over of a spell, removed the Australia skipper in an eye-catching performance to lead a restrictive bowling display from England. The only potential negative was a leg injury to Ajmal Shahzad late on, which forced the Yorkshireman to leave the field after completing his eighth over.

Woakes returned to the side along with Steven Finn, for his debut, with Chris Tremlett left out due to a slight side strain, while Michael Yardy was omitted.

Local favourite Shane Watson and Brad Haddin picked off boundaries in the initial stages but their blossoming 48-run stand was ended by Woakes with just his second ball.

Watson (16) viciously cut a short and wide ball that Paul Collingwood sharply held just above his eyes. Finn then claimed his first one-day wicket when Haddin, who hit seven fours in his 37, tried to create space for himself but was bowled by a well-aimed yorker.

Clarke's arrival was then greeted with some boos but despite that he began brightly taking 17 from his first 13 balls.

England were able to slow the rate in the middle overs though as Collingwood removed Shaun Marsh with his first ball before Woakes produced a seaming delivery that Cameron White edged through to Matt Prior. The wickets prompted Clarke to rein in his earlier strokeplay as he and David Hussey set about a stand of 65 from 95 balls.

Woakes ended their rebuilding in his first over back when Hussey chopped onto his own stumps before Clarke reached his 50 from 70 balls. It brought warm applause from the crowd but he was unable to continue on as he top-edged a pull of Woakes which Strauss held. Woakes then also removed John Hastings and Brett Lee to restrict Australia's late hitting.
