Wimbledon 2014: Andy Murray seeded third for title defence

Reigning champion: Andy Murray

Andy Murray will be the No3 seed for the defence of his Wimbledon title, despite having a world ranking two places lower.

The Championships have a unique way of working out the men’s and women’s seeds — previous grass court results are added to the official ATP Tour rankings.

As a result, Murray should have an easier passage to the last four. World No1 Rafael Nadal will be seeded No2 at SW19, with Novak Djokovic the top seed.

Also in the men’s section, Stan Wawrinka, the world No3, will be seeded No5, while Jerzy Janowicz, a semi-finalist last year, has a world ranking of No24 but will be the 15th seed. The women’s top seed reflects the world rankings, with Serena Williams No1.

Meanwhile, John McEnroe does not believe Roger Federer will win another Grand Slam despite amassing a record 17 of the game’s greatest titles.

Federer’s last major triumph came with victory against Murray at Wimbledon two years ago — his seventh honour at SW19. The Swiss master heads into this year’s Championships as the father of two sets of twins and this expanded family is one reason McEnroe believes another title is not possible.

McEnroe said: “I don’t think he is going to win another major. I thought he had one more in him and he did it. He won at Wimbledon and he played spectacular that year.

“But, you add another set of twins? My God… But it’s still possible that he will get a run at a Grand Slam. Wimbledon is his best chance.”
