Williams targets Euro title

Packing a punch: Williams demonstrates his power against Scott Gammer
14 April 2012

Danny Williams has shelved thoughts of retirement to fight on at 33 - but Brixton's British heavyweight champion is refusing to climb back aboard the tiresome merry-go-round at domestic level.

Aiming at the European title, held by Ukranian Vladimir "The Hunter" Virchis, Williams has ruled out a third meeting with china-chinned Audley Harrison.

He said: "I definitely do not want to get involved in all that, although I would fight Matt Skelton again if it could get me the Commonwealth title." Bedford's Skelton and Williams are 1-1 in previous meetings.

Williams rolled back the years to knock out Wales' inexperienced British champion Scott Gammer in nine rounds last week, when his form fluctuated so much during the fight that he questioned whether he should fight on.

The one time conqueror of a faded Mike Tyson added: "I had so much positive feedback from people who said I showed glimpses of world class. I believe I can still compete with 'world' champions like Oleg Maskaev."

But the world title scene suddenly got a little bit more dangerous for Williams and the 30-something belt holders yesterday with the announced professional entry of Olympic champion Odlanier Solis, one of three Cuban gold medallists who have defected and will be based in Germany and the USA.
