Wessels clears the first hurdle

Peter Wessels, the defending champion from Holland, eased into the second round of the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, with a straight sets victory over Tomas Zib, of the Czech Republic.

Wessels won 7-6, 6-1 and was joined in the next round by No 3 seed Davide Sanguinetti, of Italy, who defeated Zimbabwe's Wayne Black 6-3, 6-3.

Another Dutchman, seventh seed Jan Siemerink, was beaten 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 by American left-hander Jeff Salzenstein and bigserving Taylor Dent, of the United States, was too powerful for Czech qualifier Ota Fukarek, winning 6-3, 6-2.
