Wenger not frustrated by inactivity

12 April 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no intention of adding anything but an "exceptional player" to his squad.

The Gunners did not sign any fresh faces during the January transfer window but Wenger is, however, expected to renew his interest in Southampton teenager Gareth Bale during the summer, when more funds may be available.

Wenger said: "To work well in the future, a club like ours should only have to buy the exceptional player and have a good enough squad to fight for the rest."

He added: "I did not buy anybody in the transfer window because there is no point bringing average players in."

The Arsenal manager added: "Frustration? No I would not use that word. The only problem could arise if I find the exception - the player everybody wants in the world - and I do not have the money to buy him.

"Then it is frustrating, but that was not the case - I was not on any ball at all."

Wenger insists the future is bright for the Gunners.

He said: "Look what we have now and I am confident that in the coming years we have enough quality to fight for the championship.

"You have to be strong enough to play the young players when there is a big demand. What would have happened if we had lost to Tottenham with young players? But you have to know what you want and stick to it.

"If you want to know how good your players are then you have to play them."
