United want £5m Saha

United target: Louis Saha

Manchester United look certain to pursue their interest in Louis Saha.

Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed with the Fulham striker's performance in the west London club's 3-1 win at Old Trafford just over a week ago and although Chris Coleman said there had been no official contact, it is understood that United have made an initial enquiry about the Frenchman. He would command a transfer fee of around £5million.

Saha scored his sixth goal of the season in yesterday's 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool and Fulham manager Coleman was forced to admit afterwards: "At the end of the day we're Fulham. Look what has happened with Steve Finnan. He went to Liverpool.

"The reality is that we're a nice little club, but if clubs like Manchester United or Liverpool want to come and get your players and pay the money, then that's what is going to happen."

Coleman said that United had not made an approach for the 25-year-old Saha, who was signed for £2.1m from French club Metz three seasons ago. He also confirmed that Fulham were in talks with the player about signing a new contract with the club.

Coleman added: "He's happy to talk to us but we have some very good players here and there is bound to be interest.

"All my players are happy here, though. We've just signed Steed Malbranque and Sylvain Legwinski on new contracts and the way Lee Clark is playing we're going to have to talk to him as well because he played very well against Liverpool."
