Tudor and Croft are back

13 April 2012

Alex Tudor and Robert Croft are back in the England squad for the third Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

As predicted, Derbyshire all-rounder Dominic Cork has been dropped in favour of the Surrey man.

Off spinner Croft replaces injured Warwickshire left-armer Ashley Giles, who is out for four to six months with an Achilles tendon problem.

Tudor's only previous home Test appearance was against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 1999 when he hit an unbeaten 99, the best score by an England nightwatchman.

Meanwhile, England captain Nasser Hussain has been ruled out so Michael Atherton retains the captaincy.

Hussain missed the eight wicket defeat at Lord's after damaging a finger on county duty for Essex.

He is now aiming to be fit for the fourth Test at Headingley, along with England's other injured batsmen Graham Thorpe and Michael Vaughan.

Nottinghamshire batsman Usman Afzaal and Yorkshire paceman Chris Silverwood, squad members at Lord's but left out, are retained.

It means there is no place for controversial Middlesex spinner Phil Tufnell, who had been touted for an international recall after missing out since the 1999-2000 tour of South Africa.

Squad: Mike Atherton (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Mark Butcher, Mark Ramprakash, Alec Stewart (wkt), Ian Ward, Usman Afzaal, Craig White, Robert Croft, Alex Tudor, Andy Caddick, Darren Gough, Chris Silverwood.
