James Tredwell took three quick wickets to revive England hopes in their must-win World Cup Group B match against West Indies at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Off-spinner Tredwell shifted Chris Gayle, Devon Smith and Darren Bravo before Ravi Bopara accounted for Darren Sammy and Devon Thomas with his medium pace, reducing the Windies to 118 for five after 20 overs.

England had earlier posted a patchy total of 243 after winning the toss in this day-night fixture.

After Jonathan Trott and captain Andrew Strauss got their team off to a flying start, the scoring rate stagnated as wickets began to fall - and it fell to competition debutant Luke Wright to salvage a competitive total in an innings bereft of a half-century or a 50 stand.

West Indies leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo, on his international debut, and Andre Russell (four for 49) shared seven wickets - while Kemar Roach put the brakes on with new and old-ball economy.
