Bernard Tomic heads into his match against Tomas Berdych later today confident of causing another Wimbledon upset.
The 20-year-old Australian has never faced Berdych but the world No59 is undaunted by his opponent’s ranking, after ousting No9 seed Richard Gasquet on Saturday in his Centre Court debut.
Berdych, the No7 seed, recovered from a set down to beat Kevin Anderson 3-1 and Tomic, who will become the third youngest man ever to reach two Wimbledon quarter-finals should he defeat Berdych, said: “I managed to watch a little bit of that match after mine.
“I think Anderson was up, should have closed out the fourth set but Tomas played well to break back. It’s not going to be easy because Tomas is very strong. He hits a big ball and you’ve got to be ready.
“I can use what I have and really give it to him because if I play my tennis, he’s not going to like what I have to offer.
“I’m playing a guy now who has been in the final of this tournament before.
“This guy can beat [Roger] Federer, can beat Novak [Djokovic], can beat everyone. It’s not easy playing this guy. I’ve got to be ready.”
The winner of the clash on Court One is likely to face world No1 Novak Djokovic, who plays Tommy Haas today, in the last eight.
Tomic said: “If that match comes across [against Djokovic], it will be huge. I can’t think ahead of myself, especially playing against Tomas.”
Berdych, who lost the 2010 final at SW19 in straight sets against Rafael Nadal, said of Tomic: “He’s a very tough and tricky opponent. He can really be a danger.
“His game is very different to the other guys. I think patience is definitely going to be the word.”
