Sabine Lisicki pulled off a shock win to send defending champion Serena Williams out of Wimbledon, on a day which also saw the end of Laura Robson’s dream run.

Robson blew her chance to become the first British woman since 1984 to reach the quarter-finals at SW19 as she lost 7-6 , (8-6), 7-5 to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

The result left Andy Murray as the sole British presence in the singles competition. Murray was taking on Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny on Centre Court this afternoon.

However, the biggest shock came on Centre Court as No23 seed Lisicki kept her composure to see off Williams in a deciding set, ending the American’s run of 34 matches unbeaten.

After Lisicki marched through the opening set 6-2, Williams roared straight back to claim the second 6-1.

An out-of-sorts Williams managed to save one match point before Lisicki steadied herself to complete a famous victory.

Lisicki and Kanepi will now meet for a place in the semi-finals tomorrow.
