Belgian captain Johan Van Herck has thrown his number one player into the ring for the doubles at the Davis Cup final in Ghent.

David Goffin and Steve Darcis were named as the pair to take on Andy and Jamie Murray at the Flanders Expo on Saturday afternoon.

At the draw on Friday, Darcis and Kimmer Coppejans were slated to play the doubles but it was always likely Van Herck would replace the latter.

He could have picked Ruben Bemelmans, who impressed against Andy Murray in singles on Friday, but instead plumped for world number 16 Goffin - who, like Murray, will now have to play on all three days of the tie.

It was a sign Van Herck felt the doubles was a rubber the Belgians simply must win to stand a chance of lifting the trophy, with Goffin due to take on Murray in the reverse singles on Sunday.

Goffin had to expend more physical and emotional energy than he would have wanted in coming from two sets down to beat Kyle Edmund on Friday as the first day of the tie ended level at 1-1.

The decision was also a risk because of Goffin's lack of doubles pedigree, while Bemelmans has won four of his last five doubles rubbers.

Goffin's only previous doubles experience in Davis Cup came on his debut against Great Britain in Glasgow in 2012, when he and Bemelmans lost in four sets to Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins.

The 24-year-old, meanwhile, has only won two tour-level doubles matches in his career and has not played a match with Darcis since 2012.
