Teddy to carry on

14 April 2012

Portsmouth have released Teddy Sheringham - but the former England striker has not decided to hang up his boots.

The 38-year-old made an impressive start to the season but finished it on the substitutes' bench as Lomana LuaLua formed a fruitful partnership with Aiyegbeni Yakubu which staved off the threat of an instant return to Nationwide Division One.

Sheringham told Sky Sports News: "I signed on a one-year contract and the club have decided to move on - and I've got no problem with that whatsoever.

"I've only recently found out I won't be offered a new deal - so I'll have to see what offers come in and go from there."

The former Tottenham and Manchester United forward is hopeful he can carry on playing at the highest level of the domestic game in this country.

He added: "I'll have to wait and see if a team comes in who think I can play in the Premiership."

Sheringham netted five goals in as many top flight games at the start of the season but netted just three more in the Premiership thereafter.

However, he is delighted the Fratton Park outfit managed to survive, adding: "We set out to stay up and we've managed that by a clear margin.

"I think everyone's very pleased. We've got a great team spirit here and there's a lot to be said for job satisfaction.

"We've got some good players here and the fans have been great - it's been a very enjoyable season."
