Sven: Why top players quit

Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted today that the demands of international football were persuading players to quit.

Manchester United's Paul Scholes recently retired from England duty to spend more time with his family and Eriksson said the same might happen with David Beckham after the 2006 World Cup finals.

Eriksson said: "At the moment we have a very good captain in David Beckham and I hope he will still be in charge in the World Cup Finals.

"After that it is difficult to say. Physically there is no reason why he should not go on at the highest level but, mentally, one day you wake up and say 'I'm tired of this'.

"That's why many players are starting to say 'no thank you' to international football. It's too much travelling, staying in hotels and playing international football while the other players are having a few days holiday."

Meanwhile, Eriksson has no intention tonight of turning his England team into the great entertainers. Poland beat Azerbaijan 8-0 on Saturday, but Eriksson said: "That was an unreal game. Entertainment is not a word used by coaches and players."
