State motorcades face ban from special 2012 road lanes

5 April 2012

Heads of state could be excluded from the 60 miles of reserved road lanes during the Olympics, raising the possibility of them getting stuck in traffic.

The lanes will be closed to the public to get athletes and organisers to the 2012 Games on time but Tory members of the London Assembly were furious that motorcades would add to the pressure on London's roads.

Victoria Borwick said: "I thought the whole point of cordoning off parts of London's road network was to reserve it for Olympic athletes and officials. Now it transpires that the motorcades for heads of state will not necessarily be using these exclusive lanes.

"Instead their cavalcades will be carving their own way through central London, no doubt leaving further traffic disruption in their wake. Londoners simply cannot afford to have their city brought to a standstill."

The routes, including parts of the Embankment, will operate between 6am and midnight. Drivers caught using the lanes could be fined £200.

TfL said: "Work is under way with all key 2012 partners, including the police and security services, to manage the expected attendance of VIPs in London during the Games, alongside the millions of other visitors."
