Charlotte Dujardin has set her sights on becoming the first British woman to seal a hat-trick of Olympic titles despite a parting of the ways after Rio.

The 31-year-old and her horse, Valegro, won individual and team gold at London 2012, and the pair defended their individual title yesterday.

Aged 14, Valegro will not be at Tokyo 2020 but she has pledged to ensure she has the equine back-up to be Olympic champion for a third straight Games.

She said: “He is a once-in-a-lifetime horse. I owed it to him to finish at the top. I also knew it could be one of the last times with Valegro.”

Dujardin and Valegro were a class apart with a score of 93.857, 4.5 points clear of their nearest rivals.

She said: “It was truly magical. It means the absolute world to me to finish off being gold medallist. I felt a huge amount of expectation.”
