Jake Humphrey: I have a job to do but I’m a crazy fan like everyone else

It feels like the Olympic Games has finally come alive. The last few mornings we have been waking up to headlines of people asking where the gold medals are for Team GB.

The London Games feels like London buses — two gold medals have come along at once. The women’s rowing yesterday morning was amazing. Helen Glover saw an advert for ‘tall people’ to sign up to the rowing team and that’s how she got involved — now she is an Olympic champion.

Not only did Glover and Heather Stanning win a gold medal in the coxless pairs but from about 500m they absolutely dominated — the atmosphere in the BBC office was incredible.

It was about a seven-minute race and no work was done for that whole time as everyone was just staring and cheering the screens. Moments like that make you realise that although you are working on the Games, you are just an excited fan like everyone else.

Then there was Bradley Wiggins in the afternoon, picking up the gold in the time trial. This has been such a great time for him after his Tour de France win.

The great thing about cycling out on the road is that it’s the sport of the people, with thousands turning up to see Wiggins win gold and Chris Froome bronze. You didn’t have to pay to watch it, you could just head down with your family and the atmosphere was incredible.

The Olympic Park has its own version of Henman Hill and there were thousands of people cheering on Bradley. The atmosphere in the park has really changed because even though neither of the cycling medals were won there, the atmosphere went up just a notch which was great to see.
