Government fails to settle dispute over Games' profits

The Court of Arbitration for Sport will rule on the row between the British Olympic Association and London 2012 organisers after the Government failed to resolve the dispute over profits from the Games.

BOA chairman Colin Moynihan wants a larger share of any surplus after next summer's Games. He met Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson this morning asking for public money to be used to make up the shortfall.

But Robertson rejected that plea and announced the Government could not mediate in the dispute with the London organising committee (LOCOG), who want any surplus to be based on the profits from both the Paralympics, which are expected to make a loss, and the Olympics.

Robertson said: "The Government is not and cannot be a mediator in a dispute between two private companies and I reiterated that there was no additional Government money available to help solve the dispute. I have encouraged the BOA to resolve the matter as quickly as possible in order to allow everyone to get back to making preparations to ensure 2012 is a great success."

No date has been set for the CAS hearing in Lausanne but the dispute is embarrassing for LOCOG and the BOA with an International Olympic Committee delegation in the capital on a three-day inspection visit.

It is understood the BOA are seeking more cash to fund new ventures to expand their current remit, which is basically to kit out the British team at Olympic Games and provide a training base.
