Londoner's have led Britain’s medal haul — with one borough alone clinching three golds.

Competitors who were born or have settled in the capital won 16 medals — eight gold, five silver and three bronze — putting London ahead of Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Brazil, Jamaica and even Yorkshire in the gold medal tally.

Enfield, with a population of 300,000, won three golds, more than Canada, Sweden and Mexico.

Enfield-born Charlotte Dujardin, 27, won the individual dressage and team dressage and Ben Maher, 29, who is from the borough, won gold in the team showjumping.

Enfield council’s Labour leader Doug Taylor said there was “a fine sports tradition” in the borough.

London’s gold medal heroes also include runner Mo Farah, who won the 10,000 metres and 5,000 metres, cyclist Bradley Wiggins, boxer Anthony Joshua and women’s team pursuit cyclist Joanna Rowsell.

The silver medal winners are 400m runner Christine Ohuruogu, canoeist Richard Hounslow, judo’s Gemma Gibbons, rower Mark Hunter and tennis player Laura Robson. Karina Bryant won bronze in judo, as did rower Mo Sbihi as part of the men’s eight and taekwondo’s Lutalo Muhammad.

“London has not only staged the best Games in history but Londoners also have a clutch of booty all their own!” said Mayor Boris Johnson.

Yorkshire has seven golds including heptathlete Jessica Ennis and boxer Nicola Adams, plus two silvers and a bronze.
