Martin Offiah: London’s the place to be this weekend

19 August 2013

London Broncos may have fallen at the semi-final stage of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup but the capital will still be celebrating the sport in style this weekend.

Rugby League is taking over Trafalgar Square on Friday as part of the build-up to the World Cup — being hosted in England and Wales — which is just over two months away.

I’ll be there alongside England coach Steve McNamara. There will be a chance to get your hands on the World Cup trophy and take part in a coaching masterclass, while there will also be a demonstration of Wheelchair Rugby League.

If that’s not enough, there’s the Tetley’s Challenge Cup Final between Wigan and Hull at Wembley on Saturday. The last time these sides clashed in the showpiece was in 1985. That was arguably the best final ever and we are in for a treat if the game gets close to that.

Wigan are marginal favourites but Hull are the form team. Wigan have been decimated by injuries and that has seen them beaten too often. Hull are over their dip in form and showing the character which will fill them with confidence.

Last week, Hull were losing against Salford but turned it around — that wouldn’t have happened earlier in the season. So Wigan will need their stars 100 per cent fit because if they are not, it’s a huge and daunting stage to find your form.

For those reasons, this final could go either way.

In last week’s Super League, Widnes caused a huge upset by beating Warrington with 12 men. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing as I watched the game in a bar in Ibiza.

For Widnes to beat Warrington with 12 men was astonishing
