Southgate puts blame on McClaren

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has made a veiled attack on England coach Steve McClaren for leaving the club in a state of limbo after his departure.

Southgate is preparing for a vital relegation showdown with fellow strugglers Charlton today and has admitted he has been playing catch-up with the rest of the division since his appointment.

He said: "We have inherited problems from the previous season. Most clubs had already planned their preseasons and planned their signings, but we didn't have that in place because the manager knew he was going."
