Sol on the carpet at FA

Sol Campbell was today charged with violent conduct by the Football Association just 24 hours after he had talks with Sven-Goran Eriksson about his disciplinary problems.

The decision was on the recommendation of the FA's video advisory panel following the Arsenal defender's retaliation against Manchester United's Eric Djemba-Djemba during the Community Shield.

He faces a three-match ban if found guilty and is already due to be suspended for one game as a result of his sending off against Everton last weekend.

Campbell, who withdrew from the England squad to play Croatia tomorrow with a shoulder injury, had already been unhappy about his treatment following the red card he received during Arsenal's clash against Manchester United at Highbury last season.

Eriksson today revealed that he, FA chief executive Mark Palios and other officials talked with Campbell yesterday at the squad's hotel.

Campbell was sent off for an elbow on United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in April and was refused leave to appeal against the decision. The defender was banned for Arsenal's final three matches plus the FA Cup Final.

"I talked to Sol before the squad was announced," said Eriksson today. "We had a long chat with him, together with FA people.

"He's been extremely unlucky at the end of last season and the beginning of this season. He is not a dirty player."
