Sidhu facing three years in jail for manslaughter

Former India cricketer Navjot Sidhu has been sentenced to three years in jail for manslaughter.

Passing sentence, the judge at the Punjab High court also ordered the 43-year-old to pay a fine of 100,000 rupees (£1,136).

The opening batsmen, who played in more than 50 Test matches for India between 1983 and 1999 averaging 42.13, had since become a cricket commentator on national television and was also an MP for the the main opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He has been found guilty of killing 50-year-old Gurnam Singh over a parking space dispute in Patiala during 1988, when Sidhu was in the peak his career.

The man died in hospital after being struck by Sidhu.

The sentence has been suspended until January, when Sidhu will be be allowed to appeal in a higher court.
