Sheringham scoops writers' award

Teddy Sheringham has been named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

The Manchester United striker narrowly edged out team-mate David Beckham by just two votes with Arsenal's Patrick Vieira in third spot and another United player, Roy Keane, in fourth.

Sheringham, who is the first Englishman to win the game's oldest award since Alan Shearer in 1994, was just one of eight United players who received votes, reflecting their domination of the domestic game.

He said: "It's an honour to receive this award bearing in mind the illustrious names who have won it in previous years.

Although I'm very down and disappointed at the moment after going out of Europe on Wednesday night, this is a very special personal highlight in my career.

"I'd like to thank my team-mates for all their help and support this season. This is an award for the club as much as myself."

Sir Alex Ferguson added: "I'm delighted Teddy has been voted Footballer of the Year by the FWA. It's a fitting tribute to a player who has contributed so much to Manchester United this season.

"It's always difficult singling out individuals amongst so many great players, but Teddy has been truly exceptional for us and thoroughly deserves the award."

Paul McCarthy, chairman of the FWA, said: "Teddy's scoring feats for United have been magnificent, he has got vital goals at vital times of the season and has proven an essential component for both his club and country."

Sheringham will be presented with his award on Thursday, May 10 at a gala dinner in London.
