Sangakkara tops rankings

12 April 2012

Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara's brilliant performance against England this week has lifted him to top spot in the world Test rankings.

Sangakkara maintained his phenomenal recent run of form by hitting 92 and 152 to help Sri Lanka to an 88-run win in the first Test in Kandy.

His second-innings century made him the first batsman to score in excess of 150 in four consecutive Test matches.

He has leapfrogged Australia captain Ricky Ponting at the top of the ratings, and his elevation means Sri Lanka now occupy top spots in batting and bowling.

Muttiah Muralitharan, who this week became Test cricket's most prolific wicket-taker, remains the top-ranked bowler.

England seamer Matthew Hoggard has moved up five places to fifth after taking six wickets in the match, while Kevin Pietersen is England's highest-ranked batsman in sixth.
