England captain Katy McLean believes success in the Six Nations could be crucial to her side’s hopes for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in France this summer.
Tomorrow’s match against defending Six Nations champions Ireland at Twickenham will provide the perfect test of her team’s ability.
The triumph by Ireland last year ended England’s run of seven straight Championship titles, which included six Grand Slams.
Ireland have picked up where they left off, winning their first two games of this season, whereas England’s start has been indifferent — a defeat in France was followed by a comprehensive victory over Scotland.
“The Six Nations is all about form,” said fly-half McLean. “ Ireland were champions last year and it will be a tough test. It’s a must-win game for us. It’s the last major tournament before the World Cup. There are some top sides in the Six Nations, so it is crucial going forward for us.”
Previous World Cups have been frustrating for England, losing to New Zealand in the last three finals.
McLean added: “They’re a fantastic team but we can’t get caught up in the past. We know they’re a beatable side. It should be a fantastic tournament — hopefully I’m there!”
Entry is free tomorrow and kick off will be 30 minutes after the men’s fixture finishes.
