Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips found himself in an unlikely war of words with One Direction singer Niall Horan.

There was an angry confrontation between Phillips and a number of Irish players after Paddy Jackson scored the final try of Ireland’s dominant 26-3 victory.

Pop star Horan who hails from Mullingar, County Westmeath, tweeted his assessment of Phillips’ reaction: “Mike Phillips is like a child throwing his toys out of the pram! his attitude is terrible, looks like a right arrogant idiot.”

This prompted Phillips to reply with a challenge that incurred the wrath of thousands of One Direction fans.

He tweeted: “@NiallOfficial come down to training in the week big boy. Bring the rest of The Beatles with you.”

Horan received support from Ireland full-back Rob Kearney who had sparked the clash with Phillips after Jackson’s try.

He wrote: “don’t worry @NiallOfficial – I’ve got your back!!”

The two rugby players then revealed they had ended hostilities and enjoyed a night out together after the match.
