Seilala Mapusua’s local knowledge will help visitors

10 April 2012

Seilala Mapusua was not surprised by Chris Ashton's 95-metre try against Australia, which suggests Samoa will face a daunting challenge tomorrow.

After four years and 107 games in the Premiership, London Irish centre Mapusua has a deep knowledge of every English player, including Northampton's Ashton.

"Playing in the Premiership means I know how dangerous England will be and that try by Ashton highlighted the threat we face," said Mapusua.

"As a rugby fan, I enjoyed the try. It was a great score, which means we'll have to get our defence right. We hope to show Samoa are making progress and the fact so many of our squad play Heineken Cup and Premiership rugby means we know what has to be done."

England have dominated the majority of the last five fixtures between the countries, although Samoa gave the 2003 World Cup-winning side a scare in Melbourne before losing 35-22.

A combination of powerful tackling and a willingness to run the ball from anywhere means control of possession is key against Samoa.

Mapusua does not expect Martin Johnson's men to shut up shop tomorrow to ensure a win and added: "England have shown they are capable of running the ball and that has always been the way we play.

"They brought in Matt Banahan to partner Shontayne Hape at centre, which means a couple of big boys are in front of me, but I'm used to tough challenges."
