Danny Care and James Haskell were today recalled to the England squad for next month’s tour of South Africa.
Care was left out of the Six Nations squad after being arrested four times in three months this season and is waiting to see if police will take action over an allegation of sexual assault, which he denies.
His outstanding form for Premiership leaders Quins has earned him a recall and he has quit drinking in a bid to prove he is changed man.
Haskell, who is with New Zealand side Highlanders after a spell in Japan, is the only overseas player in the squad and benefits from injuries to Tom Wood and Tom Croft.
Ugo Monye has been picked despite concerns over his hamstring injury and he replaces the injured Charlie Sharples in a squad that includes a host of young talent, such as the London Wasps pair of Joe Launchbury and Christian Wade.
Injuries to hookers Rob Webber and Chris Booker have earned a surprise call-up for Leicester’s Tom Youngs, the elder brother of England scrum-half Ben Youngs. The 25-year-old played for England Under-20 as a centre and his Premiership experience as hooker is limited to 12 games off the bench.
Chris Robshaw, one of nine Harlequins players called-up, captains the 42-man squad.
England head coach Stuart Lancaster said: “Myself and Graham (Rowntree) rang the players yesterday and there is a real excitement about this squad.
“We have a massive challenge ahead of us but it is one that everybody involved, players, coaches and management is looking forward to.”
