Juan Roman Riquelme, the Argentina playmaker, flies into Merseyside today for last-gasp transfer window talks with Everton.

Riquelme, 29, unsettled at Villarreal and seemingly on his way to Atletico Madrid, is considering the offer of a one-year loan deal.

Last season he fell out with Villarreal's coach Manuel Pellegrini and spent much of the campaign back in Argentina with Boca Juniors.

Thomas Gravesen made a shock return to Goodison from Celtic yesterday after signing for a season on loan.

Manager David Moyes looks certain to give the colourful Danish midfielder, 31, his first Everton outing at Bolton tomorrow since he left for Real Madrid in a £2.5million deal in January 2005.

Gravesen, who rejected the chance to join Sheffield United, said: "I've always said I would never want to come back to any club in England other than Everton - I am an Everton player.

"In my five years here we improved all the way and we ended on a high and that is what I want to achieve again. This is a great feeling.

"It is always difficult to come back to a place but I hope it goes well. It is very important for me after being given another chance in the blue shirt."

Everton finally unveiled Nigeria striker Ayegbeni Yakubu yesterday, who predicted he will achieve his ambition of playing in the Champions League after completing his club record £11.25m move from Middlesbrough.
