Reyna goes home

12 April 2012

Former USA captain Claudio Reyna has completed his move to his hometown club - the New York Red Bulls.

The 33-year-old was released by Barclays Premiership side Manchester City 24 hours ago and quickly agreed to sign up for the MLS outfit.

"I am pleased that Claudio has agreed to sign with our club," said Red Bulls sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena, who coached Reyna with the US national team and the University of Virginia."

He added: "Claudio is a proven player at the highest levels in the game and his experience and leadership skills will improve our team. I'm excited to have him as a member of the Red Bulls."

He is the second player - behind David Beckham, who has agreed to join the Los Angeles Galaxy - to be recruited under the designated player rule, which allows him to receive a wage above the MLS mandated maximum of 300,000 US dollars (£151,400) per year.

Reyna was thrilled to be back in the US after a stint in Europe which included spells at Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Rangers and Sunderland.

He said: "I'm very excited to be coming back to play at home minutes from where I grew up.

"I look forward to playing for Bruce, who I have known for such a long time, and am excited about the whole opportunity to join a club that is looking to do a lot of good things in the future."

Reyna won 112 caps for his country and captained the US at the World Cup in 2002 and 2006.
