Redknapp worried he may lose Yakubu for £6m

14 April 2012

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp fears that 15- goal striker Ayegbeni Yakubu, whose signing helped the club clear of relegation, could be lured away for just £6million.

The 21- year- ol d Nigerian striker has matured with seven goals in his last eight games, during which time Pompey have soared from the bottom three - unbeaten with five wins and three draws.

Yakubu was originally recommended to Redknapp by Sir Alex Ferguson, who remembered his abilities from Champions League games against Israel's Maccabi Haifa. Half the problem for Redknapp is that Maccabi still own 50 per cent of Yakubu's contract, which states he can move on if a club bid £6m for him.

That is small change for a regular scorer and now Portsmouth face a struggle to hold on to him. Even the likes of Charlton and Fulham - both desperate for a prolific striker - can afford £6m with pockets burning from the sales of Scott Parker and Louis Saha respectively.

And Newcastle could propose a swap with Lomana LuaLua, who has already had a successful loan spell at Portsmouth.
