Police reassure Brentford fans

Police in Cardiff are reassuring fans travelling to the Millennium Stadium for the Second Division play-off final between Brentford and Stoke on Saturday that hooligan problems can be prevented.

There are fears that supporters of Steve Coppell's side could get caught up in trouble between fans of Stoke and the host city's side Cardiff.

There were violent scenes when Brentford's Second Division rivals met in the play-off semifinal last week. Superintendent Kevin Tumelty said: "We will not tolerate anyone causing trouble and spoiling it for everybody else."

Meanwhile, Pierre van Hooijdonk was the toast of Rotterdam after the Dutch international twice beat Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehman on the way to Feyenoord's 3-2 UEFA Cup Final victory. It was fitting that the former Nottingham Forest and Celtic striker finished the job, after almost single-handedly hauling his side into the final with six goals in the competition before last night.

"This final meant a lot to me," he said. "First of all I am 33 and I can't imagine me, or us as a team, having another opportunity to win a medal in the UEFA Cup or the Champions League. It was a great win for Dutch football."
