Players hit back in drugs storm

13 April 2012

Stunned players past and present yesterday rounded on Gary Player for claiming that drugs are rife in golf.

The 71-year-old, a winner of nine majors, sparked outrage by saying that golfers are getting away with using performance-enhancing drugs because there is no testing.

But after completing their first rounds yesterday, Retief Goosen and Australian Rod Pampling called for Player to name names, while former great Jack Nicklaus insisted there was no problem.

Goosen, who shot a first-round 70, said: "I don't know what Gary was trying to prove. I am very shocked at his comments.

"I don't know if he is trying to damage the sport. If he wants to come and make these comments, why doesn't he name them?"

The dual U.S. Open champion said drugs were not even a topic of conversation among modern golfers.

He said: "I've seen loads of Advils flying around for back pain but I have not seen anything else."

Australian Pampling, who also earned a one-under 70 yesterday, echoed Goosen's sentiments.

He said: "If he's definite, he should name the people. I don't think anyone should stand up and say there are definitely people using drugs and then not name them.

"I haven't seen anyone, so I don't know who he's talking about."

Nicklaus, who was at the RBS Jack Nicklaus Majors Challenge in London, was left mystified.

He said: "I don't know why Gary made those comments. I know of zero people taking drugs.

"I don't think there's a problem — if there is we will deal with it. Gary might have more inside knowledge on this than me.

"If there was a problem in the sport it is a golfer's technique that will always determine how far he can hit the ball."

England's David Howell added: "If there was one person in the world taking drugs I would be amazed. Maybe I'm naive."
