Pietersen ton steers England

14 April 2012

Kevin Pietersen struck his fifth Test hundred to get England back on track in the Headingley Test against Pakistan.

Pietersen helped Andrew Strauss' men recover from losing three wickets before lunch and rode his luck in the process before retiring hurt on 104.

England closed the first day on 347 for six, after winning the toss, with Ian Bell extending his outstanding form with an unbeaten half-century and Chris Read celebrating a recall after a two-year absence with 38, equalling his Test best score.

Pietersen's contribution was the seventh three-figure score by an Englishman in three matches of the npower series to date, which the tourists trail 1-0 following an innings thrashing at Old Trafford.

Pietersen led a charmed life on his way to a 123-ball century, however, as he was given not out off an inside edge and also caught behind off a no-ball.

Pietersen revealed it was best for him to come off the field when he did.

"I thought it was best to come off because I couldn't bat," Pietersen told Sky Sports.

Pietersen admitted he had been lucky and added: "I've had a few decisions that haven't gone my way in the past so I will take it.

"You try your hardest, I just went out there and played like I normally play."
