Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg has been hailed for his bravery after announcing he is to retire from the sport with immediate effect.

Rosberg, who claimed his maiden title at the season-deciding race in Abu Dhabi last Sunday, made the shock revelation at a press conference in Vienna.

"I have decided to end my Formula One career here," Rosberg, 31, said.

Rosberg revealed that he took his final decision to walk away from the sport in the hours after his championship triumph.

"It was a process on Monday," Rosberg added. "I didn't know if I had the balls, and I took a bit of time.

"But I am done. End of story, and the next step is being a dad and a husband and I am very much looking forward to that."
