British sprinter Nigel Levine has been provisionally suspended after failing a drugs test for banned asthma drug clenbuterol.

The 28-year-old, a European 4x400metres relay champion, had only just returned to training after breaking his pelvis in a motorbike accident with team-mate James Ellington in Tenerife 13 months ago.

In a statement, UK Athletics said: “The provisional suspension was issued by UK Anti-Doping. The individual now has the opportunity to respond to the charge against him.”

Clenbuterol is widely used to treat breathing problems but is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list because it can also burn fat and boost aerobic capacity.
