Olympic dream ends for Storey

Sarah Storey
12 April 2012

Sarah Storey has been dropped from the Great Britain women's team pursuit squad for the Olympic Games in London next summer.

The decision ends her hopes of claiming an Olympic and Paralympic gold medal double next year, and comes despite her featuring in the gold medal-winning women's team at the recent World Cup in Cali, Colombia. The news was confirmed in a blog on her website Team Storey Sport.

"Shortly after returning to Manchester from her appearance for the Women's Team Pursuit squad in a World Cup, Sarah Storey was informed her association with the squad would no longer be continuing and she would now not be considered for the London World Cup in February, the Track World Championships in April and ultimately the Olympic Games next summer," the blog post read.

Quoted directly in the blog, Storey said: "I collected my bags in Manchester and before heading home was told my performance in Cali was not as good as they (the selectors) were looking for and so this is the end of the journey for me with the Great Britain team pursuit team.

"I have always said that London 2012 is about riding as many events as I am good enough for and so now it is important for me to concentrate on the other events I have at the Games."

Storey, who has a disability which affects her left hand, will now focus her efforts on the Paralympic Games.
