O'Driscoll the hero for Ireland

Ireland made a winning start to their Six Nations campaign and will be satisfied they overcame a tricky first hurdle at the Stadio Flaminio.

The home side were magnificent and remained in with a chance of victory until late into the game.

Ultimately, they were undone by Brian O'Driscoll, who set up tries for Geordan Murphy and Peter Stringer. Italy led 9-8 early in the second half before Stringer's touchdown.

The hosts cut the gap to 18-12 but Denis Hickie's try ensured an Irish victory. Italy had the final say when prop Martin Castrogiovanni powered over.
