Newton handed ban

12 April 2012

Great Britain hooker Terry Newton has been handed a two-match ban after being found guilty of striking.

The controversial Bradford player was placed on report by referee Richard Silverwood for a high and late tackle on St Helens forward Jon Wilkin during the Bulls' 34-22 defeat by the Super League champions at Knowsley Road on Friday night.

The League's video review panel decided Newton had a case to answer and he was given a two-game suspension and a £500 fine when he appeared in front of the disciplinary committee in Leeds.

It means he will miss Bradford's home game against Salford on Sunday and their trip to Harlequins the following Saturday but it could have been worse.

Newton, who joined Bradford at the end of the 2005 season, missed the first 11 matches of last season because of a heavy suspension imposed for dangerous tackles on St Helens pair Sean Long and Lee Gilmour while he was still a Wigan player.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield centre Jamahl Lolesi was found not guilty when he appeared before the disciplinary panel on a charge of striking.

Lolesi was sin-binned during the Giants' 16-12 defeat at Leeds on Sunday for a late tackle on scrum-half Rob Burrow.

The move comes in the wake of an official protest by the Giants, who have asked the League's disciplinary commissioner Norman Sarsfield to investigate their allegation the club's players are being victimised.
