Murray out of French Open

12 April 2012

British number one Andy Murray has finally admitted defeat in his bid to be fit for the forthcoming French Open.

The 20-year-old has had his wrist in a cast since injuring the joint playing a shot during last week's Hamburg Masters tournament.

He told www.andymurray.com: "I saw the doctor on Monday and as I expected I'm going to have to withdraw from the French Open."

Murray added: "But good news is I got the cast off and I'll start physio treatment on Wednesday and take it day by day to see how it feels and reacts.

"I'm not going to make any decisions on the grass yet. I'm going to see the doctor in a week to see how it feels and how much the inflammation has settled."

There had been confusion over Murray's chances of playing in Paris after his coach Brad Gilbert last week appeared to rule him out.

Gilbert said of Murray at the time: "He's pulled the plug on the clay-court season and we're hoping he'll be back and ready to compete at Queen's in a few weeks."

But the American's claim was disputed by Murray at the weekend, when he insisted no firm decision had yet been made.

"I will make a decision on the French Open and grass season once I have a better idea of what the injury is and how long it is going to take to heal, which I will hopefully have a better idea of on Monday," he said.
