Monty storms up Ryder Cup table

13 April 2012

Colin Montgomerie won the Murphy's Irish Open by a massive five shots in Cork.

The Scot was in pole possession from the moment he set a Fota Island course record of 63 in the opening round.

Montgomerie closed with a 66 for an 18 under par total of 266.

Home pair Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington roared into joint second place with rounds of 64, while Swede Niclas Fasth was alongside them after equalling Montgomerie's course record.

The £161,618 first prize takes the Scot from 13th to sixth in the Ryder Cup table.

It was his first European tour victory since the Volvo PGA championship in May last year.
