Aston Villa and Liverpool may be forced to wait in their respective bids to sign Newcastle forward James Milner.

The England Under 21 international is due for talks over the possibility of a new contract with Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan after returning from holiday.

Milner still has three years left on his current deal but is seeking fresh terms. No date has been fixed for that meeting, however.

Villa are believed to be ready to pay  £8million for the winger, who had a successful loan spell with the club two years ago.

Martin O’Neill was set to make Milner one of his first signings for the club in August, 2006, before he was recalled by Newcastle and the transfer collapsed.

But Liverpool are also interested in Milner and are thought to have one  player-plus-cash bid turned down. Among the players offered to Newcastle were teenage defenders Jack Hobbs and Emiliano Ensua.
