Milestone will mean nothing without cups, says Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney insists playing for England will mean nothing if he does not win any silverware during his international career.

The Manchester United striker will earn his 50th cap should manager Fabio Capello select him against Ukraine in midweek.

But the 23-year-old said: "I am pleased if I can get to the 50 caps but I want to win a trophy. Hopefully in the future we can do that. Everyone knows what is expected of them and everyone respects Fabio Capello because of his previous record. You listen to him and I am enjoying it at the minute. Hopefully we can qualify for the World Cup and keep progressing.

"You work on all aspects of your game in training - your finishing, defending and I think the team is playing a lot better now. It is certainly helping me."

Peter Crouch limped out on Saturday's 4-0 win over Slovakia with a dead leg following a challenge from Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.

And the Portsmouth forward said: "I thought he was my mate to be honest, but obviously not. I went up with him and he kicked out and gave me a dead leg.

"I was gutted to come off, I just wanted to carry on running around but having both our other strikers come off, the manager wanted to take me off.

"If I rest up on ice, hopefully I can play some part on Wednesday.

"It was a little bit out of order. We both went up for the ball and he kicked out. But these things happen. It's for other people to discuss."

Skrtel protested his innocence and claimed he was only trying to win the ball.

He said: "I said sorry to him and it is okay because it is football."
