Milan success for Rusedski

13 April 2012

Britain's Greg Rusedski had an easy passage into the third round of the Milan indoor tournament today when his opponent, Marc Rosset, was forced to retire with a back injury.

The No 8 seed from Switzerland injured himself while leading 2-1 in the first set and despite struggling on he lost that set 6-3 and retired after the British No 2 held his opening serve in the second.

The defeat was a sorry end for Rosset, the defending champion.

Rusedski could now face Russian world No 2 Marat Safin in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Amanda Coetzer, the No 4 seed, slumped to a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 defeat to Japan's Shinobu Asagoe in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Her compatriot, Ai Sugiyama, beat France's Sandrine Testud and faces Martina Hingis in the quarter-finals.

Anne-Gaelle Sidot plays Russia's Anna Kournikova in one of the other quarterfinals.
