McCarthy woe over first league defeat

13 April 2012

Mick McCarthy was left to count the cost of Wolves' first Championship defeat of the season as the League leaders lost 3-0 at home to Reading.

They were undone after only four minutes when goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey punched the ball into his own net under pressure at a corner.

That started the rot as they conceded goals from Andre Bikey and Kalifa Cisse to end a run of seven straight wins.

Injuries to wingers Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis added to McCarthy's woes and the Wolves boss said: "We've been beaten by a good side who have pace and power up front.

"We had almost forgotten that bitter taste of defeat but the cost is huge, with the injuries.

"We might have caught Michael's in time because he was just starting to feel a problem — but everyone saw Matt go down.

"Stephen Ward also has a problem with his ribs and Andy Keogh had a knee in the back."
