Diego Maradona is in a stable condition and no longer suffering from the abdominal pains which led to him being rushed to hospital yesterday, the De los Arcos clinic said in a press release.

But the Argentinian legend will remain for the time being at the clinic, where he will be looked after by a medical team including doctors and psychiatrists supported by obesity, nutrition and liver specialists.

The 46-year-old 1986 World Cup winner returned to hospital just two days after being discharged following another health scare.

"During his first 24 hours in hospital, Diego Maradona has not suffered the symptoms which caused him to be admitted," said the statement.

"However, there are some changes in test results which make it advisable to keep him in to monitor how he develops.

"The patient remains stable and the next press release will be delivered on Monday midday (Argentinian time)."
