Jonny Wilkinson sealed a dramatic Powergen Cup victory for Newcastle yesterday when he added a drop goal in the fourth minute of injury time to his seven penalties.

Seconds earlier, Kenny Logan had landed the penalty that seemed to have put Wasps into the quarter-final.

Wasps' defeat came only a month after Newcastle had grabbed another injury-time victory over them in the Zurich Premiership.

Newcastle manager Rob Andrew said: 'I'm really proud of the way we battled - and we have the best kicker in the world in Jonny Wilkinson.' Nigel Melville, Wasps' director of rugby, said: 'Jonny's a one-man team. You just cannot afford to give him penalties like that. 'You have to give Newcastle credit for fighting back, but I thought we had it won it, even though we did struggle when we lost our half backs Mike Friday and Alex King to injury. I'd rather get hammered than lose that way.' King and Wilkinson swapped penalties before Fraser Waters crossed for a 20th-minute try and King stretched the lead with a drop goal.

In the first minute of the second half, King set up England's Joe Worsley for a simple try.

Wilkinson hit back with two penalties but Logan was on target with the boot to make it 19-9. Wilkinson then took control with four more penalties to put Newcastle 21-19 ahead.

Wasps were not finished, however, and Logan's second penalty gave them the advantage once again before Wilkinson's thrilling finish.
