Kluft: I’ll quit after Olympics

Carolina Kluft, the world and Olympic heptathlon champion, has revealed that next year's Beijing Olympics will be the last major championships in which she will compete in the multi-discipline event.

The 24-year-old Swede has remained unbeaten in the heptathlon since March 2002, a run that includes two Olympic golds, two world and two European titles and indoor titles at world and at European level.

She is the undisputed greatest female athlete in the world. But, after competing for a third world title in Osaka in August, and then a third Olympic gold next year in Beijing, Kluft intends to turn to a single event, probably the long jump.

"I have goals left but I can't do the heptathlon forever," she said. "After Beijing, I plan to compete in single events, probably the long jump, which is my best event."

That is good news for Britain's new heptathlon star, Jessica Ennis, but Kelly Sotherton may run out of time herself before Kluft calls it a day.
