King Courtney first to reach 500

Courtney Walsh yesterday became the first player to take 500 Test wickets when he trapped South Africa's Jacques Kallis lbw in the second Test in Port of Spain.

The veteran West Indies paceman, playing his 129th Test in 17 years, reached the landmark by taking two wickets in the same over.

He had Gary Kirsten caught behind by Ridley Jacobs for 22 and, two balls later, dismissed Kallis for a duck to send the Trinidad crowd wild. Walsh said: 'It has been a big drain just thinking about this record from the beginning of the series. I'm happy to get this out of the way. 'I'm just hoping to get through the series now. I don't think 600 is on the cards.'

A presentation ceremony to commemorate Walsh's achievement was held in the pavilion at the close of play.

The 38-year-old Jamaican's double strike reduced South Africa, 56 runs behind on first innings, to 38 for two. But they recovered well in the final session to finish the third day on 130 without further loss with opener Herscelle Gibbs unbeaten on 57 and Daryll Cullinan 41 not out.

Earlier, Jacobs - chasing a maiden century - had been left stranded on 93 not out as the West Indies were dismissed for 342. Jacobs shared a record 71-run ninth-wicket partnership with Mervyn Dillon.

The stand was the best for that wicket in eight Tests between the countries, eclipsing Pat Symcox and Allan Donald, who added 66 at Port Elizabeth in the 1998-1999 series.

The West Indies, resuming on 250 for seven, went into lunch on 321 for nine after Dillon was out in the last over before the break for 21 off 87 deliveries.

Jacobs was left seven short of his target when Walsh was run out without scoring after the resumption. It was his 42nd Test duck.
