Jones set for Windies

Simon Jones needs to emerge unscathed from another match in India to cement his place on England's Test tour of the Caribbean.

Glamorgan fast bowler Jones finished with 10 wickets as the A team won their warm-up game against Tamil Nadu in Chennai.

But Jones, who has been sent to India to confirm his complete recovery from a career-threatening knee injury, will not go to the West Indies unless he shows he is fit enough to play in back-to-back matches.

The 25-year-old paceman admitted to feeling stiff during the Tamil Nadu fixture so England will watch him carefully over the next few days and during this weekend's game in Jalandhar.

All being well, though, Jones should be on his way to Jamaica next week as the 16th member of Michael Vaughan's squad. Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: 'We need to see how he performs in the next game.

'Simon said himself he felt terrible halfway through the Chennai game but it's great he's back on the pitch and taking wickets.

'The first hurdle to cross was whether he could stand up to bowling and at the present stage things are going well.'

Meanwhile, the Australian cricket team today left Colombo for Dambulla to contest the first game of the five match one-day series on Friday.

The 30,000-seat Dambulla International Cricket Stadium is the newest cricket venue in Sri Lanka and will host the first two matches, with the series finishing in the capital Colombo.
